Ivona, Princess of Burgundy, one of Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz's best plays, has recently been adapted for the opera. The idea came from composer Zygmunt Krauze. The premiere takes place Sept. 29 and 30 at the National Theater in Warsaw and it will be one of numerous events taking place during the Warsaw Autumn Festival of contemporary classical music.

The opera was commissioned by the City of Warsaw to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gombrowicz's birth. A concert version was presented Nov. 20 and 21, 2004, at Theatre Silvia Monfort in Paris as part of Nova Polska, or the Polish cultural season in France.

Ivona, Princess of Burgundy, was Gombrowicz's first play. Written in 1935, it is a grotesque and satirical view of a society that overpowers the individual.

Krauze's opera will likely be one of the most important artistic events this year in Warsaw. It is the first Polish opera based on Gombrowicz's work.
