GK Collection #1
March 28, 2007 By Dariusz Pietrzak
The Stary Browar gallery in Poznań has opened an exhibition of art from the vast collection of businesswoman Grażyna Kulczyk. She owns this shopping, art and business center and is one of the most prominent art collectors in Poland.
The collection is a mixture of old and contemporary art. "Full of anxiety, I am showing my soul through the works from my collection," says the owner.
This is the first public showing of part of Grażyna Kulczyk's collection. It all began more than 30 years ago when she started collecting posters, which were more affordable than other artworks. Over the years, the collection expanded to include works of outstanding Polish and foreign artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Bruno Schulz, Igor Mitoraj, Tadeusz Kantor, Katarzyna Kozyra, Roman Opałka, Alina Szapocznikow, Jerzy Nowosielski, Jacek Malczewski, Andrzej Wróblewski, Henryk Stażewski and Andy Warhol.
The exhibition is divided into eight rooms, each of which is devoted to a separate theme: nudes, religion, library, perversion, fashion, body sculpture, inanimate objects and museum. The exhibition features paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs, video art and installations. The collector has not shied away from including many bold pieces that challenge various taboos. Many of the contemporary works on display are intentionally provocative.
Roman Tratsiuk, who designed the exhibition layout, has introduced various architectural details into the exhibition space. For example, constructivists' works are shown in a "white cube," or a completely white room prepared especially for this purpose.
