At a meeting with Justice Minister Zbigniew Dyka and a group of prosecutors July 27, President Lech Wałęsa said he planned to ask the Sejm to grant prosecutors special powers that would enable them to expose economic crimes. Wałęsa mentioned the need to stage a series of show trials to deter potential criminals. Hot topics in the press for over a year, rackets like the ruble affair, "alcohol-gate" and the scandals surrounding the Art-B company and the Foreign Debt Service Fund, or FOZZ, are just "the tip of the iceberg", Wałęsa said, adding he was dissatisfied with the lack of results in the investigation against those responsible for financial abuse.
