Poland Nov. 11 signed a formal contract with the organizers of the Expo 2010 exhibition in the Chinese city of Shanghai, allowing it to take part in the prestigious international event.

A total of 158 countries have expressed interest in taking part in the exhibition. Eight have so far formally signed up.

The commissioner-general of the Polish section of Expo 2010 and her team responsible for preparing Poland for the event are working as part of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency.

The agency has handled Poland's preparations for three Expos to date: in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1998, in Hanover, Germany, in 2000, and in Aichi, Japan, in 2005.

Poland has taken part in these world exhibitions since their inception in the mid-19th century. In all, Poles have won 78 Expo Grand Prix awards and dozens of gold, silver and bronze medals and honorary diplomas. At the 2000 Expo in Hanover, Poland was fourth among 172 participating countries in terms of the number of visitors, attracting over 3.2 million out of the total 18 million drawn by exhibitors throughout the five-month event.
