Folk Christmas
December 19, 2007
Article's tools:

The State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw is hosting an exhibition of both traditional and contemporary artwork on the theme of Christmas.

The exhibition, open until Jan. 31, includes traditional Christmas cribs, paper cutouts and paintings depicting the holidays. They are displayed against the background of local landscapes-often with the scenery of a specific city or region.

The nativity scenes refer to various forms of traditional Polish architecture and specific city landmarks, such as Cracow's Sukiennice Cloth Hall and Warsaw's Royal Castle.

As Christmas continues to inspire artists, various cities in Poland have hosted competitions for the most beautiful cribs in recent years. These are often organized under the auspices of institutions including museums, which encourage artists to experiment with techniques and materials. The Warsaw exhibition includes pieces that were submitted to such competitions.
