Russia to Lift Polish Meat Ban?

Russia is soon expected to lift its ban on Polish meat exports following talks in Moscow Dec. 13 between Poland's Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki and his Russian counterpart Alexei Gordeyev.

The ban, introduced in November 2005, has been one of the most sensitive issues in relations between the two countries. In response to the Russian embargo, Warsaw blocked negotiations on a new cooperation agreement between the European Union and Russia.

Sawicki said the Moscow talks were the result of "months of the European Commission's efforts and a firm stance of both the EU and Polish diplomats." Sawicki added the problem was "resolved in a way that met Poland's expectations," with Gordeyev "clearly declaring that the Russian market would reopen to Polish meat and meat products."
