Jubilees always make us wax nostalgic. In fact, a magazine's anniversary is very similar to a regular birthday in this respect. Perhaps that's because a newspaper is like a living organism. Or maybe it's because a newspaper is the people who create it and those for whom it is published.

A newspaper is like a mirror reflecting its staff and its readers. In it we publish what we consider important and what we think is important to our readers. Of course, we don't only use experience, knowledge and imagination. We also turn to modern research methods.

A thousand issues ago we founded The Warsaw Voice out of a heartfelt need. I am not ashamed to use this sentimental expression-I'm taking advantage of the right offered by a jubilee. For those who were aware enough at the time, it will be obvious that the idea to publish an English-language weekly in Poland in the fall of 1988 was a heartfelt need. The wind of history was already blowing quite strongly, and the chance to set our sails to that wind, to explain to foreigners who we were and what was going on, was a truly fascinating prospect.

A thousand issues have gone by in a flash. Our heartfelt need is just as strong, our fascination is just as great. That hasn't changed, but many aspects of reality are completely different. As time passed, we worked our way up the ladder, professionally and market-wise. Besides the weekly printed magazine, we come out in an attractive and expanded electronic format. We did our best to stay on top of things and fought for our readers' attention with determination, remaining faithful to the principles of credibility, independence and objectivity.

A jubilee is an occasion to say thank you. Therefore I would like to thank readers for choosing to read The Warsaw Voice, advertisers for choosing to advertise in our pages, and the Voice staff for doing what they do.
