Stanisława Bęben, Fund Acquiring Department of Rzeszów City Office

The Polish government has resolved to enter the Rzeszów Metropolitan Area into the draft National Spatial Development Plan-a big success which will trigger dynamic growth in Rzeszów and the entire Podkarpacie province. Among those who lobbied for the status of a metropolitan area for Rzeszów was Rzeszów Mayor Tadeusz Ferenc.

The Rzeszów Metropolitan Area will consist of the city itself and six nearby counties. The National Spatial Development Plan still awaits approval by the parliament, but even now it is a huge development opportunity. To begin with, Rzeszów will be able to apply for funds which the European Union assigns for metropolitan areas. In Poland, funds available for such areas total over 700 million euros. It will be easier to attract investors and the province will gain importance.

The campaign for metropolitan area status was a joint effort by politicians, members of the local government and the academic community. The mayor of Rzeszów repeatedly said in Warsaw that without metropolitan area status, Rzeszów would find it hard to develop and create new jobs. All the arguments were taken into account and what counted in Rzeszów's favor in particular were social welfre considerations and the determination of the local authorities of the Podkarpacie province. Another evident contributing factor was the expansion of Rzeszów and the plans to push the city limits even farther.

The many assets that Rzeszów can boast include a steadily growing airport which now accommodates international flights, a thriving academic center and the Aviation Valley which brings together companies in the aviation industry. Another important argument for Rzeszów is its proximity to Ukraine.
