Holocaust Remembered
January 16, 2008
Article's tools:

Warsaw will be commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27, the date on which the Nazi-run Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in southern Poland was liberated in 1945.

An empty tram bearing a Star of David will be traveling the streets on Jan. 26-27 just like the original Warsaw Ghetto tram. The organizers of the commemorations will be calling on Varsovians to honor Holocaust victims by lighting candles in their windows on Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. An official ceremony will be held at the Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto on Jan. 28 at noon. Parliamentarians, representatives of Jewish organizations, scouts and schoolchildren will attend. International Holocaust Remembrance Day, now in its third year, was established by the United Nations General Assembly under a Nov. 1, 2005 resolution.
