Songs of Transience
January 16, 2008    wersja polska »
Article's tools:

The full version of Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki's 8th Symphony Songs of Transience will be performed at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Warsaw's Praga district Jan. 31.

The symphony was composed to works by German poets such as Joseph von Eichendorff, Reiner Maria Rilke, Karl Kraus, Hermann Hesse, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Achim von Arnim. Penderecki wrote the symphony for three solo voices, choir and orchestra. Although this work is called a symphony, it is in fact a series of nine songs about the passing of time and impermanence.

The symphony will be performed by the National Opera Choir and Orchestra conducted by Penderecki himself. Soloists taking part include soprano Olga Pasiecznik, mezzo-soprano Agnieszka Rehlis, and baritone Vytautas Juozopaitis.

Jan. 31, Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 53 Kawęczyńska St., Time: 7 p.m., tel. 022 826 32 88.
