Mobile Computing Power

One of the first mobile notebooks with Microsoft Windows Vista and a "push" email facility, the HTC Shift opens a new era in mobile computing. The HTC Shift combines Windows Vista with access to 3G/HSDPA and uncompromised performance in a compact casing. The HTC Shift is first to feature HCT SnapVUE technology which provides immediate access to emails, an electronic calendar, text messages and contacts without the need to launch the system fully, which saves energy and extends battery life. The unit weighs merely 800 g and features a 7-inch touch sensitive screen that slides out.

Skype Telephone

The NETGEAR SPH200W telephone works using the Skype program without the need to access a computer. It uses a program that enables free calls through the internet to Skype users, and calls to mobile phones and land lines.

The WiFi telephone will work everywhere in the world where there is access to WiFi hotspots that do not require logging on through search engines - at home, public hotspots and within reach of a wireless facility. Users use the phone in the same way as when using Skype. The telephone menu shows the Skype contacts list together with information about their accessibility, similarly to the Skype program on a PC. Users will also appreciate the sound quality and the long talk time (4 hours) and standby time (48 hours).

Alpine for Everyone

Alpine has launched a new series of car radio sound systems with the CDE symbol. The CDE-9872R/RM model with green or amber illumination includes a CD and MP3 player and a 4x45W amplifier. It works directly with an iPod. Design and sound is of the highest level, which is traditional for Alpine.

On and Off-Road

The Touareg, the biggest Volkswagen model, has been on the market since 2003. Last year it got an updated body to bring it into line with the look of other Volkswagen models. The changes included the design of the grille and the shape of the headlights. Part of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) category, this giant is 4.75 m long, 1.92 m wide and 1.7 m high. Despite the vehicle's suitability for off-road driving due to its dimensions, wide clearance and four-wheel drive, the Touareg is more often used for city commuting due to its luxury interior and comfort. The model comes with a choice of two petrol engines and three turbocharged diesel engines. The less powerful 3.61 petrol engine delivers 280 HP. The car is fitted with an automatic, six-speed Tiptronic transmission with an option to switch to manual. The vehicle, weighing more than 2 tons, reaches 100km/h within 9 seconds, and has a top speed of 215 km/h. Average fuel consumption is 13.81/100 km. It exceeded 16 liters during a test drive in winter conditions. But fuel consumption will not be the owner's biggest problem given the zl.250,000 price tag.
