Online Department Store Up and Running

123market.pl, Poland's first online department store, opened for business in November.

The store is a joint venture between Capital Partners (CP), which holds a 31 percent stake, and several private investors. CP is expecting revenue of around zl.30 million in 2008. The portal offers a comprehensive range of services in addition to sales and there are separate departments for different categories of products.

The portal allows only one reputable supplier to sell products via the website in each product category.

"This strategy eliminates the potential for fraud and other problems associated with online trading. These suppliers will operate as the portal's own stores rather than as external suppliers," says chairman Rafał Falęcki.

The portal is exceptionally easy to use. Users are registered as soon as they purchase something, and there are plans afoot for a single point of sale in the near future. This would allow users to shop around the portal and use a single "shopping trolley."

123market.pl is aiming for 15 stores by the end of 2008 and hopes to be listed on the stock exchange within two years.
