Gifts of Love
January 30, 2008
Article's tools:

While a Valentine's Day gift should above all express your feelings, it will not hurt if you choose a present that is unusual, surprising and amusing.

Feb. 14 is normally a day to send words of affection to the one you love, but if you feel like it, you can send a card with kind words to a friend, a colleague-or even your boss. No mailbox should remain empty on this day. Gifts are traditionally just signed "Your Valentine" and the recipient is supposed to guess who it came from. Popular Valentine's cards are the easiest way to express your feelings.

The most unusual and expensive valentine's card in history was given by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis to opera singer Maria Callas. The card was made of pure gold, with a heart set with diamonds and emeralds and the envelope was made of mink's fur. The gift cost $250,000. Below you will find somewhat cheaper but nevertheless attractive suggestions to enchant the person close to your heart.

Heart of gold
The chain of Yes jewelry stores has prepared a selection of golden pendants specially for Valentine's Day, including hearts set with diamonds and zirkonias. The hearts come in different shapes and sizes, as love has many faces. The selection includes the Diamond Heart (zl.649) complete with a golden pendant adorned with diamonds. Identical hearts are worn by the winners of the Miss Polonia 2006 and 2007 beauty pageants. The Little Heart of Diamond, in turn, costs zl.289. You can also try a set consisting of a pendant (zl.289) and golden earrings (zl.179) set with zirkonias. Single heart-shaped pendants are available at zl.149 and 155.

An exceptional Valentine's gift is a vintage-style locket set with diamonds and rubies. The price of zl.4,395 does not include the chain.

Sitting pretty
The inventor of the Clicquot Loveseat calls it "a chair full of love." The Loveseat is appropriate for both Valentine's Day and any other time of year. This extraordinary pink gift is for sharing with friends and lovers, it relaxes, woos and evokes emotions. The Veuve Clicquot champagne producer hired famous artist Karim Rashid, one of the most innovative contemporary designers, to design the Loveseat. Work by Rashid combines futuristic forms and delicate, pastel colors, the artist has worked with such brands as Kenzo, Issey Miyake, Prada and Swarovski. He has shown his works at 14 museums around the world. Comfortable and modeled on 18th-century armchairs, the Loveseat is ideal for an evening for two.

Scent of love
Perfumers like to come up with sweet, indulgent scents which evoke love. This year brings several noteworthy fragrances to perfumeries, including Wish of Love from Avon (zl.350). Locked in a subtle pink-and-white flask, this romantic scent brings together sweet flowers mixed with fresh fruit notes in which rose petals, cherry blossom and pink hortensia are surrounded by fashionable chords of cranberry. The subtle Love in White Creed (zl.470), locked inside an elegant white flask with an ornamental cap, is a blend of orange, iris, jasmine, daffodil, rose, magnolia, vanilla, sandalwood and other scents. The first flask of the perfume went to American actress Angelina Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. Part of proceeds from the sales of Love in White Creed goes to the United Nations educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

You may prefer Amor Amor Cacharel (zl.220) in a classic amaranthine flask. The fragrance contains pink grapefruit, tangerine, jasmine and blackcurrant.

Flower shower
Every woman is likely to be happy if her man showers her with flowers or gives her a special, artistic bouquet made specially for her. Such little works of art are available from the Holandia Flower Office which keeps up with international flower arrangement trends in its designs. For Valentine's Day, bear orchids in mind. The first wild orchids, cymbidium, were discovered at the foot of the Himalayas. The tough environment molded them into extremely beautiful and sturdy flowers. Their charm, delicate lines and forms, their scents and colors make them little miracles of nature. By giving such a flower, you declare love, a sense of belonging, admiration. There are thousands of types of orchids. The flowers are hard and expensive to grow, but recommendation from the Holandia Flower Office (an organization which works for Dutch producers, importers and exporters) means they are the trendiest and most desired flowers this season.

Or, if orchids are not your thing, you cannot go wrong with classic roses, tulips and violets.
