Phantom of the Opera is Here... Inside the Roma

Tickets for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera are now on sale at the Roma Theater in the run-up to the March 15 premiere of the show at the Warsaw venue. This grand production, directed by Wojciech Kępczyński, is part of the theater's 10th anniversary celebrations.

The Roma has created its own version of the musical with the blessing of Webber's London managers and it's a major logistical undertaking. The 12 main roles will have a huge supporting cast with 12 ballet dancers, 16 singers and more than 30 musicians under the direction of Maciej Pawłowski.

Paweł Dobrzycki is the choreographer; Magdalena Tesławska has designed the costumes; and the Roma's literary manager Daniel Wyszogrodzki has translated the entire libretto into Polish.

The Phantom of the Opera is based on the 1910 novel of the same name by French writer Gaston Leroux. It had been adapted for stage and screen several times before Webber's musical first hit Her Majesty's Theatre in London in 1986. The show was an instant smash and opened at New York's Majestic Theater a year later. In fact the sun has never set on the Phantom of the Opera. Its 7,486th performance on Jan. 9, 2006, made it the longest running musical in Broadway history. The previous record holder, Cats, was also penned by Webber.
