Jane Birkin in Poland
January 30, 2008 By P.M.     wersja polska »
Article's tools:

British singer and actress Jane Birkin is an icon of French song. Serge Gainsbourg chose her subtle voice for his famous recording "Je t'aime… moi non plus." Birkin will sing at the Roma Theater in Warsaw Feb. 4. It will be her first concert in Poland.

Birkin started her career playing a model in Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blowup. Later she fell in love with France although she could not speak the language and became the muse and partner of French musician and filmmaker Serge Gainsbourg.

The turning point in her career was the song "Je t'aime … moi non plus," written by Gainsbourg. Full of sexual innuendo, it became one of the most controversial songs of the late 1960s and early '70s and a symbol of the sexual revolution of the time. The song, notably featuring Birkin's heavy sighs, was forbidden in some countries and the Church condemned her rendition.

In 1975 Gainsbourg made a film of the same title in which Birkin played the leading role. From that time on, Birkin acted and sang in French more often. In 1973 she starred alongside Brigitte Bardot in the film If Don Juan Were a Woman.

Birkin starred in countless films. She had been nominated three times for the French Cesar Film Awards for her role in the movies La Pirate, Women of My Life and La belle noiseuse. She has released 15 albums and was awarded the Order of the British Empire and the French Ordre National du Mérite.
