Insider's View of Politics for Students
January 30, 2008
Article's tools:

Fifteen American School of Warsaw students Jan. 17 got a firsthand look at the Polish parliament-which is made up of the Sejm, the lower house, and the Senate, the upper house-and a glimpse of Polish politics from the perspective of Ryszard Kalisz, chairman of the Sejm's Legislative Committee and a member of parliament since 2001.

Kalisz spent over an hour with the students, offering them an overview of the internal workings of the Polish government, before he opened the floor for questions. The students, from South Korea, Finland, Belgium, the Czech Republic and the United States, were interested in the process by which Polish laws are created, the organization of the Polish government, and what influences Polish lawmakers used to create their constitution. Kalisz, a deputy with the Left and Democrats (LiD), answered questions and offered the students a guided tour of the parliament.
