New Marshal Elected
At the 19th meeting of the local government assembly Jan. 12, councilors elected Bogusław ¦migielski new marshal of the Silesia province. Marian Ormaniec and Zbyszek Zaborowski were elected deputy marshals and Mariusz Kleszczewski and Piotr Spyra province board members.

¦migielski said he was grateful for the confidence the councilors had placed in him, and invited both the coalition and opposition to join in constructive work for the benefit of residents.

Budget Approved
Silesian province budget receipts will be zl.1.6 billion this year, or 58 percent more than projected last year. Budget expenditure will also be higher, zl.1.9 billion, or 69 percent more than last year.

The largest amount of funds, or zl.715.6 million, will be earmarked for transport and communications, zl.207.2 million for culture and protection of the national heritage, zl.150 million for physical culture and sports, zl.191.2 million for welfare, zl.145.2 million for education and zl.119.8 million for health protection.

Priorities include zl.35 million to provide roofing for the Silesian Stadium together with indispensable technical infrastructure, zl.6.6 million to rebuild and upgrade the Rozrywki Theater in Chorzów, zl.4.4 million to build new headquarters for the Silesia Museum in Katowice, and zl.2.2 million to support the development of e-communication system for public administration (SEKAP).

Opera Premiere
The Silesian Opera in Bytom is staging a premiere of Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor March 26 and 27. Bert Bijnen is directing the performance, Marc Thurow is providing the stage design and Zana Bosnjak has designed the costumes. The show's music director is Tadeusz Serafin and the choir director is Anna Tarnowska. Silesian Opera soloists, choir and orchestra will perform.

Contract for Silesia
The Provincial Contract for Silesia Province document was signed Feb. 6 at a ceremony in the headquarters of the Regional Development Ministry in Warsaw. Those attending included Regional Development Minister Elżbieta Bieńkowska and, on behalf of the Silesia Province Board, Silesia Province Marshal Bogusław ¦migielski and Mariusz Kleszczewski, a member of the province board.

The document specifies rules and terms for co-financing under the Regional Operational Program and provides legal grounds for the transfer of money to carry out the program to the Silesia Province Board. Under the contract, 1.7 billion euros from the European Development Fund and 51 million euros from the state budget will be earmarked for public aid projects.

GARR Turns 15
The Upper Silesia Regional Development Agency SA (GARR) finances and promotes regional development, mainly the small and medium-size enterprise sector. On the 15th anniversary of GARR, the CSF film center in Katowice Feb. 1 hosted a conference summing up GARR achievements.

New Exhibition Center
The new CWT Expo Silesia exhibition and trade fair center has been built in Sosnowiec, about 15 kilometers from Katowice, 23 km from Pyrzowice airport and 16 km from the A4 freeway. The center is located on the premises of the former Silma engine factory. The project was developed by Kielce-based Kolporter Expo firm, belonging to Grupa Kapitałowa Kolporter.

The center covers an area of over 17 hectares. A number of exhibitions can be presented at the same time. The center's air-conditioned facilities occupy 30,000 sq m. In some of them, ceilings have been raised to leave more room for large exhibits. The center has an outdoor exhibition space of 35,000 sq m.

The project includes ancillary facilities and administrative buildings, parking lots, conference and convention rooms, a restaurant-and-shopping complex and Sosnowiec's first four-star hotel.

The Expo Silesia CWT calendar for this year is full, with plans including more than 20 exhibitions.

Silesia Museum Director Appointed
At a ceremony Feb. 11 in Katowice, Silesia Province Deputy Marshal Zbyszek Zaborowski introduced the Silesia Museum's new director, Leszek Jodliński. The Province Marshal's Office Culture Department Director Łucja Ginko, the museum's outgoing Director Lech Szaraniec and museum staff also attended.

Jodliński is an art historian. He graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. He also studied at the National School of Public Administration and did a post-graduate course on European integration at Warsaw University. From 2006-2007, he studied at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo. He had been director of the Museum in Gliwice since 2003.

Silesian Magic
The B&B gallery of photography in Bielsko-Biała Feb. 1 hosted the opening of an exhibition called Nie tak dawne pejzaże ¦l±ska (Silesian Landscapes of Not So Long Ago). It features works by Halina Holas-Idziakowa and Leonard Idziak.

The photographs show Silesia from an original perspective. Contrary to once popular perception of the region as dominated by industry and rather uninspiring, the artists see Silesia as a beautiful and magic land provoking deeper reflection.
