Italians Sashay Into Town

Article's tools:

Designer Raffaella Curiel, dubbed the intellectual of Italian fashion, was a special guest at an Italian fashion show held at Warsaw's Palace of Culture and Science March 3. Raffaella is the daughter of the highly acclaimed Gigliola Curiel, who once dressed European aristocrats.

Italy's ambassador to Poland, Anna Blefari Melazzi, opened the show. The designer donated one of her gowns to the Ex-Amino Foundation, which supports the oncological ward of Warsaw's Children's Health Center.

Creations by Renato Balestra, Marcello Buroni, Enrico Coveri, Macella Ferrera, Valentino and Versace also graced the catwalk.

A retrospective exhibition entitled Fifty Years of Italian Fashion followed. Gowns once worn by Ava Gardner, Anita Ekberg and a Versace dress tailor-made for Jennifer Lopez were on display, as was Helietta Caracciolo jewelry designed for Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. The behind-the-scenes story of the birth of haute couture was told through drawings and photographs.
