Folk Music Festival

Article's tools:

It is time for roots music, early Slavonic folklore and traditional improvisation: Nowa Tradycja (New Tradition), a leading Polish folk music festival, kicks off April 10. Over three days, Polish Radio's (PR) Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw will host performers including outstanding Portuguese fado singer Dona Rosa, British artist Andrew Cronshaw and guests, Jean-Michel Veillon in the company of the Molard brothers, and last year's festival winner, the Karpatia band.

When the first New Tradition festival was organized at the PR Concert Studio 10 years ago, few expected that the concerts would attract hundreds, but they have continued to do so to this day.

This year, the festival will see bands and soloists inspired by Polish folk music and the traditional music of ethnic minorities living in Poland. The event will also host many excellent bands from around the world. You will have an opportunity to hear Karpatia on April 10.

Cronshaw and guests Tigran Aleksanyan and Svetlana Spajic will perform April 11. On the same day you can also hear Władysław and Krzysztof Trebunia-Tutka.

Veillon and Patrick and Jacky Molard from Brittany will perform April 12. The last day will see a performance by the star of this year's festival, Rosa.

Results of a competition for best folk album will also be announced during the festival. Both performers and publishers entered 19 albums for the competition inspired by all kinds of global music traditions. This year, the jury has selected three nominees for the title.

Internet users will also be able to decide on who to give the Wirtualne Gę¶le (Virtual Fiddle) award to by voting for the best folk album of 2007 at www.gesle.folk.pl

Influences behind this genre's growing popularity include the musicians of the Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa band, the festival winner in 1998, who have toured around Europe. For the needs of the European market, the band started to perform under the English-language name Warsaw Village Band. In 2004, they won the prestigious BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music competition in the Newcomer category.
