Combining Business With Ecology

Pawe³ Karczewski, chairman of Naftoserwis company, talks to Agnieszka Jackowska.

Naftoserwis is getting stronger as Poland's largest provider of fuel infrastructure services. How well is the company doing financially?
I can proudly say that 2007 was a good year for the company as far as our financial performance is concerned. We trebled our sales and doubled the profits. Naftoserwis combines the necessary know-how and experience to provide a diverse range of services to businesses in the fuel sector. One of the main factors influencing the company's economic condition is the government's strategy for Poland's energy security. We provide services to key players on the market for fuel, including OLPP, Lotos and PKN Orlen. Last year, we focused on carrying out projects for OLPP. But at the same time our contract with OLPP has ceased to be the main source of revenue for Naftoserwis, and it now accounts for only 30 percent of our orders.

We have increased the number of our customers, making our mark on the Polish market both as a provider of repair services and a contractor for large projects.

Customer satisfaction is one thing, environmental protection is another. What does Naftoserwis do to make its business harmless to the environment?
Our strategy is not to depend entirely on a single customer and so we are happy to have a contract in the Czech Republic, where, together with Vae Controls, we are building biofuel installations for the Cepro company. We are also considering expansion to other markets in Eastern Europe and the European Union; this year we are planning to enter the German market. What we regard as our strategic projects are installations for biofuel composition and the modernization of installations for OLPP. Our priorities include making sure that our operations meet all environmental protection requirements. We consistently promote environmentally friendly attitudes among our customers so as to ensure the preservation of nature despite the expansion of industry.

Naftoserwis relies on a qualified and experienced staff. What is your strategy in human resources management?
In line with our 2007-2009 strategy, we are introducing a Human Resources Management System, a key element of which is a system for training and other activities to upgrade staff qualifications, so that people with an outstanding contribution to the company can receive the appreciation they deserve. We will also launch an Incentive Salary System. At the beginning of April, the Transportation Technical Supervision authority granted Naftoserwis the PN-EN ISO 9001:2001 certificate, which further confirms our credibility on the market. The quality policy which the management board has approved is a guarantee of top quality service.

Working With Partners Abroad
In 2006, we established contacts with new foreign partners. In July last year, together with the VAE Controls firm, we embarked on work in the Czech Republic upgrading and developing fuel terminals for the Czech firm Cepro. As general contractor, we are carrying out electrical, automatic control and programming projects, part of bio-fuel facilities currently under construction.

The range of our tasks in the Czech Republic keeps expanding. At present, we are completing work on projects in four fuel terminals. We are also conducting talks concerning our services at other Cepro terminals that need to be modernized.

We are hoping that our successful work in the Czech Republic will be a step towards setting up international consortia to carry out turnkey projects, thus strengthening the position of Naftoserwis on foreign markets. We have already entered into talks with partners, including from Germany and Eastern Europe.

We have also established contacts with firms specializing in polluted ground reclamation projects.
