Soyka Goes Solo
April 23, 2008
Article's tools:

Soyka Solo Recital is the latest DVD album from Stanisław Soyka, the well-known Polish singer, pianist and composer.

Of Soyka's dozen or so albums that have appeared so far, this is the first to record a solo performance by the musician. The new album, released March 14 and recorded Nov. 24 last year at a concert in the Polski Theater in Poznań, comprises Soyka's solo arrangements of his best-known pieces that have become part of the Polish popular music canon. They include compositions from the past decade and a half drawing on lyrics by Polish poets Zbigniew Herbert and Leopold Staff, Shakespeare's sonnets and Pope John Paul II's poem Strumień (The Stream).

"The album is in large measure a meeting with oneself. The solo formula is difficult," says Soyka. "Here, the degree of concentration is the highest possible... That was a challenge that gave me great satisfaction," he says.

The album producer is Poznań's Magic-Music record company.
