Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz and Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski April 12 signed a contract that gave Swiss architect Christian Kerez the go-ahead to produce a detailed design for a new Museum of Modern Art in the capital.

Kerez's preliminary design for the new museum-which has attracted much criticism- was chosen from 109 entries submitted to an international architectural competition. The winner was chosen Feb. 18, 2007. Construction is due to start in the first quarter of 2011 and should be completed by the end of 2013. The museum is scheduled to open to the public in the spring of 2014.

The museum will be the first of a series of new buildings to be erected on Defilad Square and will kick off the redevelopment of Warsaw's downtown. The building will border ¦więtokrzyski Park to the north and a renovated square to the south. Kerez is upbeat about the project and Polish architecture in general. The general public is considerably less sanguine if online forums are any guide. Public internet sites have been flooded with comments criticizing the building as being overly simplistic and lacking in distinctive features.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kerez said he was surprised by the extent and pace of the changes taking place in Poland. He also said Warsaw was an excellent setting for modern architecture and added that he has come across a lot of interesting buildings here.
