Tradition, Color and Variety

Regional county holidays are a unique feature of the Tomaszów county. This form of entertainment, and more importantly of cultivating traditions, has been devised by residents of the various county communes, particularly by circles of village housewives with the support of the authorities. Every commune has devised its own event showing off its customs and traditions.

In Czerniewice in May you can smell pierogi, potato dumplings and bread from a village oven. On the shortest night of June, in Smardzewice girls throw garlands of flowers onto the Pilica River. In July in Lubochnia they churn butter. The potato harvest festival sees the choice of a "King of Spuds" and the sampling of various potato dishes. Then in Rzeczyca housewives pluck down for pillows and duvets. Cabbage is shredded and pickled in Budziszewice. A grand party is held for the end of the carnival in Rokiciny.

There is friendly rivalry. All the communes enter a competition for the tastiest dish, the most original fancy dress costume, the greatest amount of plucked feathers, the most beautiful palm and painted egg, the nicest garland, the greatest amount of hand churned butter and pickled cabbage.

Competition is fierce, and the winning teams receive prizes, but it is difficult to nominate the tastiest dish or the most beautiful painted egg. Luckily, winning is not the most important part of the fun.

Apart from the presentation of a variety of traditions, there are also performances by many folk groups. One can hear folk songs and see dancers in colorful costumes that have been taken out of old trunks, some of which have been passed down through the generations. There is the hustle and bustle of chatter, music and story telling.

Visitors are invited to sample traditional folk dishes, which are not served in fashionable city restaurants. It is worth tasting the drinks that locals enjoy, most of which are local village liqueurs not available in shops. Folk handicrafts can be purchased from stalls as well as souvenirs from Będków, Inowłódz, Rzeczyca, Budziszewice and other communes from Tomaszów county.
