Totolotek, a Polish company specializing in sports betting, is branching out into Swedish horse racing. The company, in which Greece's Intralot International has a controlling interest, is hoping the weekly prize pool of between zl.11-12 million will prove a winner with punters. Poland is one of 12 countries worldwide organizing horse race betting. The others include the Scandinavian countries, Australia, South Africa and the United States.

Betting on the turf is becoming increasingly popular around the world. The payouts can be considerable. Several wins paid out 3-5 million euros last year. Totolotek sets its minimum bet on Sweden's V75, which requires picking 7 winners in 7 trotting races, at just zl.0.50. A single win, however, can net as much as 5 million euros (zl.19 million). Not surprisingly, this is the world's most popular horse racing bet.

The company is hoping that Poles will take to bets on Swedish horse racing as an interesting alternative to typical numbers games like Duży Lotek, where the cheapest ticket costs zl.2.

"Our goal is to win over new clients and attract players with our huge winnings," says Totolotek chairman Tomasz Chalimoniuk. "We expect to boost our sales growth, which has exceeded 20 percent over the last few years, even further."
