Renowned Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki and his wife El¿bieta were April 29 awarded the prestigious Order of Bernardo O'Higgins by Chile's ambassador to Poland, Jose Manuel Ovallo Bravo.

"The government of Chile awards this ancient and exclusive order to citizens of other countries who have made outstanding contributions to relations between their countries and Chile and who have contributed to the progress of humanity in academia, science and art," the ambassador said.

He added that Penderecki and his wife had made "fantastic contributions" to music and culture, "not only for the benefit of Poland but the entire world."

El¿bieta Penderecka accepted her husband's award on his behalf as he was abroad on a concert tour.

The April 29 reception was also an opportunity to bid farewell to the Chilean ambassador and his wife Maria Paz, who are leaving Poland for a U.S. posting.
