One Million .pl Names
May 14, 2008 By A.R.
Article's tools:

10.6 million euros is how much Poland expects to earn from agricultural and food exports this year-an increase of 6 percent from last year.

The millionth .pl domain was registered in the national internet domain register kept by Poland's Scientific and Academic Computer Network (NASK) May 6.

"Passing the one million mark in Polish domains coincides with the fifth anniversary of launching a fully automated system of domain registration and the introduction by NASK of a Partnership Program that allows partner companies to individually register domains in the national register," said Andrzej Bartosiewicz, head of the NASK Internet Domains Division. "Ever since we introduced the Partnership System, we have been noting an increased number of registered domains."

The Partnership System allows domain subscribers to choose from among several dozen service providers. Currently, there are 95 entities cooperating with NASK, including 37 foreign companies.

The approach to internet domains has changed in recent years. Until not long ago the domain meant nothing more than an address needed to ensure the proper work of company servers and e-mail. Today, with its growing importance in both traditional and online business, the domain has become an asset with market value. It can be bought, sold, leased or held as a good investment substituting for traditional investment in stock or real estate.

The internet domain is becoming a virtual office and has many features of a real location. A good address boosts profits. Meanwhile, the number of attractive domains is limited. According to experts, changes which are now taking place, coupled with low investment costs, will be pushing up the value of domains. These predictions are confirmed by the global expansion of the secondary domain market. New services, such as domain valuation, auctions, booking and recovery, are emerging. Operating on this market are both private individuals and companies specialized in registering internet names for the sole purpose of generating traffic. According to Bartosiewicz, around 8 percent of the domains in the Polish .pl domain name register are used for no other purpose than generating traffic and thus earning a profit.
