Sosnowiec is one of the largest cities in Silesia, the most industrialized region of southern Poland. Today Sosnowiec has a population of some 222,000, renowned for their hospitality, business acuity, care for the natural environment and cultural heritage.

Boasting a range of attributes, Sosnowiec can hold its own amid growing competition on the market and welcomes all types of businesses. Small- and medium-sized private firms, however, predominate and most often are from the electrical engineering, machine construction and automotive sectors and the food industry.

Sosnowiec is very pro-business and efforts to attract investment have resulted in growing interest from production and service firms. Over 150 firms with foreign capital have set up their headquarters in Sosnowiec.

Sosnowiec is also an important seat of learning and is the site of many departments of the Silesian University, the Silesian University of Technology and the Silesian Medical University and art and sports colleges. This young, educated cadre, open for new challenges and understanding the constant need for education, makes a fantastic economic asset for the city.

Sosnowiec also has a vibrant cultural scene and hosts a variety of cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions, which are popular and well attended. The city can pride itself on many old buildings of architectural interest, works of art and excellent sporting and leisure facilities. A well-developed road system and the city's location close to the intersection of Poland's major freeways ensure easy transportation of goods. Moreover, Sosnowiec is close to two international airports, in Pyrzowice and Balice. The city is easy to get to and thus worth investing in.

New technology
Sosnowiec is striving to attract firms developing new technologies by building the Sosnowiec Science and Technology Park (SPNT). The park is a joint effort between local government, the Mine Restructuring Company, the Agency for Local Development and three of the region's biggest higher-education establishments: the Silesian Medical University, the Silesian University and the Silesian University of Technology. It covers an area of over 11.8 hectares and its purpose is to provide firms with all the technology they require, such as for data-transmission and all forms of media.

The park is the site of intensive work to improve road access to local and regional roads, develop an infrastructure and convert two buildings, with a total area of almost 9,300 square metres, to meet the needs of research and development firms in the pharmaceutical, chemical, mechanical, IT and bio-medical fields, among others. The current project stage is a good time to incorporate future investors' requirements into the plans for the park. The park is part of a larger project called "The Silesian Economic Gate-the launch of the Zagłębiowska Economic Zone," which is one of the region's key projects in its operating program for 2007-2013. As part of this larger project, basic infrastructure such as mains water and sewerage will be provided to several hundred hectares of land in Sosnowiec designated for production and service firms. This land is in the eastern part of Sosnowiec and is on the site of the former Maczki Bór sand quarry. It is next to the DK 1 Cieszyn-Gdańsk road that crosses Poland from north to south and close to the Euroterminal in Sławków. This rail terminal is the only one in the heart of Poland that has wider railway tracks to accommodate trains from the east.

Sosnowiec welcomes everyone who sees a development opportunity in new projects linked with introducing innovation and modern technology.
