Dan Person, managing partner of Magnusson Law Firm and chairman of the Swedish Business Club in Poland, talks with Ewa Hancock.

How is your business club different from foreign chambers of commerce in this country?
The Swedish Business Club is a sub-division of the Scandinavian Chamber of Commerce (SPCC) and mainly focuses on events that are typically Swedish. Hence the club is to a large degree involved in cultural events like Swedish National Day (June 6) and the celebration of St. Lucia's Day (Dec. 13). Both these events are among the biggest in Warsaw, each of them attracting 500 to 700 guests, offering a great opportunity to market both Sweden and Swedish companies.

Which sectors of the Polish market are the most sought after by Swedish companies?
You have the retail sector like H&M, Kapp-Ahl, IKEA and so on. You have the industry sector like Husqvarna, Tetra Pak, Scania and Volvo. You have banks like SEB, Nordea, Handelsbanken. You have the energy sector (Vattenfall), shipping (Stena), cosmetics (Oriflame, Catzy), telecoms (Ericsson, Tele2, Eniro), pharmaceuticals (Astra Zeneca) and even law firms. My answer would be that Swedish companies are successful in most areas and markets.

What do your members consider to be the main obstacles to successful business in Poland?
We carried out a survey some time ago and the main obstacles still seem to be bureaucracy, complicated rules regarding taxes and other regulatory matters, and the lack of proper infrastructure.
