2.2 billion zlotys was how much Poland's internet access market was worth last year, according to the country's Office of Electronic Communications (UKE).

The 7th Central European Bio-Forum Biotechnology and Bio-Business Fair provided an opportunity for visitors to get familiar with the latest developments in the biotechnology and life-science sector. Held in Łódź on May 15-16, the fair attracted 132 exhibitors from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and other countries. The event was mainly targeted at people working in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, cosmetics and food sectors interested in new technologies and in putting them into practice in their companies. Among the exhibitors were companies and institutions supporting technology transfer, including patent offices, venture capital funds, seed capital funds, and technology parks, centers and incubators. They showed innovative products and services intended for companies operating in the "bio-sector."

A special part of the fair was devoted to the presentation of research and development projects which can be applied in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food and biofuel sectors. Visitors had an opportunity to take part in numerous seminars and training courses. The topics included funding research projects and transferring research findings to the marketplace, partnership in business, the economic environment for the production of biofuels, dietary supplements, biotechnology in food production, and innovation in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry.

A panel discussion entitled Bioregions Entering the Polish Bioeconomy, attended by representatives of local government and leading biotechnology companies from Poland's emerging "bioregions" of Lower Silesia, Małopolska and Łódź province, attracted special attention from participants at the fair.

The fair was sponsored by the minister of science and higher education, the chairman of Łódź province and the mayor of Łódź.
