Pol-Rail, a joint-venture between Italian railway company Trenitalia Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Polish rail company PKP Cargo, is among the top logistics operators in Europe and leads the way in terms of rail freight to and from Eastern Europe, with transport services departing from countries outside Italy to other foreign destinations also being developed.

Pol-Rail, based in Italy, operates connections along the Italy-Poland route and throughout Eastern European countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Balkans area (including Greece), and Russia through the Chop (Ukraine) and Brest (Belarus) hubs.

The company's business is primarily targeted at large Italian and foreign companies to which it offers a wide range of integrated services from terminal facilities to goods distribution in major Italian and Eastern European locations, from seeking out and monitoring train cars on the networks involved to the organization of complete trains, from cross-decking to forwarding of goods to the borders of the Commonwealth of Independent States area.

The company's rail freight services are suited to a variety of goods (ferrous materials, timber, tiles, chemical substances, domestic appliances, automotive items), and great care is taken to ensure that delivery times are adhered to, with customers being able to track their goods en route at any time thanks to an advanced GPS satellite system.

Being customer-driven and keen to offer increasingly efficient integrated services, Pol-Rail has developed its own widespread network of facilities and foreign partners (Poland, Romania, Hungary, Russia, Belarus, Macedonia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria) who put a complete logistics service at the disposal of customers, particularly in the industrial sector, but also among international shipping companies.

In Italy, Pol-Rail has strengthened its presence in the Cervignano and Piacenza hubs by developing complete train connections and an intermodal service with Gliwice in Poland and Bucharest, Arad and Pitesti in Romania, and by offering a range of warehousing services.

At present, the company manages a complete series of weekly trains, handling 2.7 million metric tons of goods in 2007, achieving consistent double-digit growth, peaking to an impressive 50-percent hike since 1995, the year of its foundation.

Pol-Rail endeavors to play its part in ensuring that an ever greater share of freight is carried by rail in an effort to achieve greater social responsibility, better environmental protection and eco-sustainable company development.

Through the expertise, competence and skills of its people (multilingual staff specializing in Eastern European languages), Pol-Rail offers high quality standards thanks to production and communication processes that comply with national and international quality regulations (certified UNI EN ISO 9001).

The next challenge for Pol-Rail is to take so-called intermodality a step forward and to create international mixed trains with weekly departures so as to ensure fast and regular connections between the major national and international economic areas, focusing especially on an increase in freight traffic to the former Soviet Union.
