Established in 1975 on the basis of Divisione Elettrodomestici of Industrie Merloni, Indesit Company is Europe's second largest manufacturer of household appliances in terms of market share. It is also the fifth largest manufacturer of household appliances in the world.

Indesit Company, founded by its current chairman Vittorio Merloni and previously known as Merloni Elettrodomestici, posted sales of over 3.4 billion euros in 2007. A stream of innovations and an ability to maintain good relations with consumers have enabled Indesit Company to enjoy constant growth. Indesit, Hotpoint-Ariston and Scholtes are the company's main brands.

Indesit Company operates through 18 production facilities and 24 commercial branches worldwide and employs over 17,000 people. The company applies a model of sustainable development that aims to further social progress wherever it operates and makes a significant contribution toward exporting goods "made in Italy." Emblematic in this context is the company's commitment to creating industrial districts in emerging markets such as Poland, Russia and Turkey. Indesit Company has grown out of an Italian enterprise well established in Europe to become a European organization with an Italian soul.

Indesit Company is one of the largest foreign investors in Poland and one of the largest foreign investors in the Łódź region. The total investment of Italian companies in Poland has reached 4.1 billion euros; of this, Indesit has invested 240 million euros. Moreover, the company is one of the largest employers in the Łódź region; in the city of Łódź, it is among the top five employers. Indesit Company is one of the leaders in the Polish market for household appliances.

In September 1999, Indesit launched its first factory in Łódź to produce freestanding cookers of the Indesit and Ariston brands for the entire European market. The official launch of its second plant in Łódź-one that produces refrigerators-in October 2004 attracted officials including European Commission President Romano Prodi and Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka.

The company's latest, huge investment project in Poland is in the central city of Radomsko. At a cost of 80 million euros, Indesit is building factories to produce washing machines and dishwashers there. Production in the new plants is planned to begin in 2008.
