Multi-instrumentalist, composer, sound engineer and record producer Mateusz Pospieszalski, a.k.a. Mateo, released a new album, EMPE3, in May. The project reflects the latest stage in a musical journey by Pospieszalski and his band that takes in jazz, poetry and folk music.

Pospieszalski is accompanied on the album by his son Marek Pospieszalski (tenor sax, soprano sax and clarinet), brother Marcin Pospieszalski (double bass, bass), and Przemek Borowiecki, known from the vanguard jazz band 100nka (drums), with guest vocals from Lisavietta Szmidt, a Romany singer.

EMPE3 comprises a range of styles, taking the listener on a trip across the musical vanguard, with a prevalence of jazz and folk. You can clearly hear inspiration by jazz classics such as Krzysztof Komeda and Ornette Coleman, and frequently the album tracks feature the exceptional and instantly recognizable sax and voice of Mateo.

Some of the best tracks include three "Carols for All Seasons" with lyrics by Fr. Jan Twardowski, Dziani Szmidt and Adam Nowak. Mateo sings on all three tracks.

Mateusz Pospieszalski, born in 1965, plays the sax, flute, bass clarinet, keyboards, percussion and accordion. He is also a singer, composer, sound engineer and record producer. He has collaborated on more than 100 different music projects with acts such as the Voo Voo and Tie Break bands. A key figure during the formative years of Polish vanguard jazz and alternative rock, Pospieszalski has played with the bands ¦mierć Kliniczna, 2TM 2,3, Raz, Dwa, Trzy, Arka Noego, and Habakuk, and singers Martyna Jakubowicz, Gordon Haskell, and Stanisław Sojka. He has written songs for a number of top Polish singers, including Anna Maria Jopek and Renata Przemyk.

He has produced albums by Justyna Steczkowska, the Zakopower band, and the latest album by Janusz Radek. He was also the producer and sound engineer of the Gala Concerts of the Review of Actors' Song in Wrocław, where the likes of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Nick Cave sang songs in his arrangements. For years Pospieszalski has also written music for film and theater.

EMPE3 is the first in a series of albums that will back the Krewniacy (Blood Relatives) public service announcement campaign. Part of the proceeds from the album will go to buy a blood donation bus and support voluntary blood donation and transplantology in Poland. The CD comes with an I-C-E (In Case of Emergency) card.
