The Villa Decius Association, a nongovernmental organization based in Cracow, is calling for nominations for its annual prize awarded to people and groups that promote democracy and tolerance. Nominations for the association's Sergio Vieira de Mello Award can be submitted until June 30.

The association, which aims to promote intercultural dialogue, named its prize after the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who was killed in a bomb attack in Baghdad in August 2003. The prize was established the same year as a tribute to him. It has been awarded annually in two categories: to an individual and to a nongovernmental organization.

Previous winners include former Polish prime minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Belarusian opposition leader Alexander Milinkevich.

The winners will receive their prizes at a ceremony Oct. 16 in Cracow. The honorary patrons of the award are the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Swedish ambassador to Warsaw, and Brazil's ambassador to Poland.
