A private collection of 40 works by some of the best Western European and American artists of the past two decades went on public view at the National Museum in Cracow May 30. The museum borrowed the collection from Polish-born art collector Rafael Jabłonka, who lives in Cologne, Germany.

The collection, exhibited under the title First Step: Towards a Collection of Western Contemporary Art, includes paintings by Miquel Barceló and Eric Fischel; photos by Nobuyoshi Araki and David LaChapelle; sculptures by Sherrie Levine, Andreas Slominski and Eric Fischel; pastel works by Francesco Clemente; collages by Andy Warhol; and video projects by Mike Kelley. Art critics say the 40 works selected for the exhibition make for an accurate picture of contemporary art where no medium or style is dominant any longer and everything seems possible.

Jabłonka, the owner of the collection, is a major European collector of contemporary art. He runs a gallery in Cologne that he set up in 1988.
