Busy Summer

Article's tools:

The season may officially be over, but many Warsaw theaters will be busy in the forthcoming summer weeks.

Tuning up for Mozart

The Warsaw Chamber Opera (WOK) is organizing the 18th Mozart Festival, from mid-June until the end of July. As every year, the festival is an opportunity to see a program of complete works for the stage composed by the Austrian genius and a selection of his songs, chamber pieces, symphonic works and oratorios.

The stylish 18th-century WOK building's hall, which has excellent acoustics and seats just over 100, will host Mozart's operas in the atmosphere of the epoch. The remaining works will be performed in the historical settings of the Palace on the Isle in Warsaw's Royal Łazienki Park, the Seminary Church at 52/54 Krakowskie Przedmieście St., the Grand Hall of the Royal Castle on Zamkowy Square and at All Saints' Church at 3 Grzybowski Sq. The WOK is located at 76b Solidarności Ave., in a building at the back of the street. For program details in English, visit operakameralna.pl. You will find English librettos at www.opera-guide.ch

Politically committed theater

The TR Warszawa theater at 8 Marszałkowska St. is staging the Polish premiere of Tony Kushner's play Angels in America, set in the 1980s and taking on the theme of homosexuality and AIDS. The epic show, lasting five-and-a-half hours with one interval, has been branded the most politically committed play of recent years in Poland. The performance was co-produced by celebrated Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski and a number of French theaters last year in France.

The Polish premiere venue will be Studio Rekording, 5 Gierdziejewskiego St., building 272A. The organizers are providing transport in a special bus from a meeting place in front of the TR Warszawa at 8 Marszałkowska St.

Performances will take place July 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m., and July 5 and 6 at 4 p.m. Details at: www.trwarszawa.pl
