Jarosław Pietras, former head of Poland's Office of the Committee for European Integration, has won a competition for the post of director general in the EU Council, where his responsibilities will include environmental protection, consumers, health and education.

The appointment still has to be officially approved by the ministers of the 27 EU countries. Pietras is due to assume his post in Brussels on July 1.

Pietras, 53, was minister for European affairs in the government of Marek Belka (2004-2005), secretary of the Committee for European Integration (2004-2006), and head of the Office of the Committee for European Integration from April 1, 2004 to April 1, 2006. After that he spent six months as a secretary of state at the Ministry of Finance. He is a graduate of the Economic Sciences Department of the University of Warsaw. He has been on scholarships at the Center for European Policy Studies in Brussels, the University of Glasgow in Britain and Duke University in North Carolina, United States.

Pietras's appointment is one of the biggest successes of Polish politicians and diplomats in competitions for major posts in EU institutions. For its size Poland still has few representatives there.
