Satellite Operator Turns Ten
July 9, 2008 By A.R.
Article's tools:

Astra Polska Sp. z o.o., a Polish subsidiary of Luxembourg-based international satellite operator Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), is marking its 10th year in business.

The first customer of Astra in Poland was Cracow-based radio station RMF FM, which started broadcasting via satellite in the early 1990s. At the time, many Polish television viewers used Astra as a window on the world, watching many channels that went on the air after the launch of Astra's first satellite, the 1A.

Astra's key partners in Poland include the Polish public television company TVP, and Wizja TV, the country's first digital TV service provider. One of Astra's satellites transmits the signal of TV Belarus, a TVP-run satellite television channel that went on the air Dec. 10 last year to reach viewers in Belarus.

Astra has ambitious plans for Poland in the next several years, from establishing a national digital platform to enabling broadband internet access in areas that are currently out of reach for current terrestrial systems.
