Portrait of a Difficult Giant
July 9, 2008
Article's tools:

A photographic exhibition entitled Portrait of a Difficult Giant by Elżbieta Lempp can be seen at the Outdoor Gallery in Ujazdowski Park until July 27. The "difficult giant" in question is the Palace of Culture and Science (PKiN) in the heart of the capital.

Lempp, who was born in Cracow, recalls that initially the Palace of Culture was merely a part of the background in pictures she used to take in Warsaw, mostly portraits of writers. And although she photographed the writers in various districts such as Ochota, Mokotów and central Warsaw, Lempp noticed that the Palace of Culture was present in every developed film: at times hidden behind a rubbish dump, in a mirror, under a bridge, reflected in a puddle on the 13th floor of a new office building.

Lempp has lived in Warsaw since 2003, and now the Palace of Culture appears more frequently in her work, but as a subject on which she has deliberately chosen to train her lens.
