Lou Reed in Town

Lou Reed is coming to Warsaw to perform at the Kongresowa Hall venue July 14.

Reed is known for his controversial and uncompromising lifestyle, since the only really famous hit he has recorded was "Walk on the Wild Side" in the 1970s. In Warsaw he will be accompanied by a 30-member orchestra with string and wind sections and a children's choir.

Most Poles know Reed not from "Walk on the Wild Side," which once topped the American and British pop charts, but thanks to Polish rock band T.Love. In their song "Banalny," the chorus starts with the line "I'm listening to Lou Reed's New York album."

Reed recorded New York in 1989 in what was a return to an alternative rock concept that he explored in the 1960s with his band The Velvet Underground. The album's rock'n'roll style did not fit in the era of disco and electronic music of the late 1980s. The album's lyrics form a whole, so listening to the entire album is like reading a book or a film script.

This summer Reed is hitting the road to dust off his 1973 album Berlin, which was a breakthrough for rock at the time. The album features opera singers, pianists, trumpeters and other musicians.

Reed has many critics as well as fans. His opponents say he is an unpredictable and arrogant scandalist who cannot sing and has an irritating voice. Fans point out that Reed has many talents because, apart from singing and playing the guitar, he writes lyrics. Over the years, he has collaborated with the likes of Iggy Pop, David Bowie and many independent New York artists. His other well-known songs include "Dirty Blvd." and "Perfect Day."
