Jazz in the Old Town: More Concerts
July 30, 2008
Article's tools:

Warsaw's 14th International Jazz in the Old Town Festival, which began in early July, continues to attract fans with performances by jazz greats, both Polish and foreign.

Aug. 2, will see a special concert by domestic jazz stars, entitled Polish Music, marking the 64th anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. The Andrzej Jagodziński Trio, Lora Szafran, and the Strings Quartet will perform in the Old Town Square that day.

A prominent jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, Andrzej Jagodziński is one of Poland's most popular jazz musicians. He set up the Andrzej Jagodziński Trio 15 years ago, together with drummer Czesław Bartkowski and bass player Adam Cegielski. Their album Chopin proved a success and won the trio many prestigious awards, sending them on a world tour.

Lora Szafran is one of Poland's foremost jazz singers who previously collaborated with groups such as Walk Away and New Presentation.

The sixth weekend of the festival will feature Chico Freeman and world-class Hammond organ player Barbara Dennerlein performing Aug. 9. Freeman is an American artist associated with the Chicago-based jazz collective AACM, alongside Lester Bowie, Anthony Braxton, and David Murray. Freeman has worked with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, The Temptations, and Earth, Wind & Fire. He has also played with Tito Puente, Machito and Irakere. His music is an interesting combination of post-Coltrane style and the expressiveness of rhythm and blues.

Dennerlein is listed alongside the world's top organists including Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFranco in annual Down Beat Critics Polls. In her music, Dennerlein merges the style of Jimmy Smith with modern-day MIDI sound.
