Celebrating World Music

The AleGloria restaurant tucked away in the basement of Warsaw’s Dom Dochodowy center came alive to the sounds of Brazilian rhythms July 25 when STX Records promoted the latest release in their Pieprz i Wanilia (Pepper and Vanilla) world music series with a summer party. STX likes to promote this hugely popular series this way every year.

Friends of STX’s Stanisław Trzciński, the series’ originator and producer, turned out in force to celebrate this, the fourth, release along with Latino rhythm aficionados. DJ Ed Szynszyl shared the stage with the stars of the evening, the Polish-Brazilian combo Joao Nascimento e Banda.

The general manager of the Polish phonographic industry association ZPAV, Marek Staszewski, presented Trzciński with two gold records for the previous two Pieprz i Wanilia compilations.

The cover notes of Pieprz i Wanilia CDs read like a world music who’s who with names like Angélique Kidjo, Chambao, Moloko, Norah Jones, João Gilberto, Asian Dub Foundation, James Brown, Gotan Project, and Abdullah Ibrahim.
