Blame it on the Bossa Nova
August 13, 2008
Article's tools:

Warsaw is going Brazilian Sept. 3-7 when the Bom Dia Brasil (Good Morning Brazil) festival comes to town, with the focus on bossa nova.

Elizete Cardoso kicked off the bossa nova craze in 1958 with the Vincius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim-penned album Cancao do Amor Demais (Song of Love Too Much). The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro has named 2008 the year of the bossa nova and Warsaw has succumbed.

The program includes a performance of Andre de la Cruz's musical Brasil o Musica. There will also be a screening of Brazilian films including Bossa Brasil: Stories of Love-the Birth of Bossa Nova (2005), which documents the history of the genre with lots of archival footage. If none of that grabs you, there's always a Brazilian style carnival parade, a Brazilian-style market, lectures on Brazilian culture, workshops on Portuguese and dancing, including the ritualistic dancing of the Afro-Brazilian Candomble religion. Dancer and Candomble officiant Augusto Omolu will be appearing as will a whole raft of musicians and dancers including As Belezas Do Brasil, Afro Carnaval, Polish-Brazilian outfit Joao Nascimento e Banda, Sambal, Samba Axe Bahia Show, Sho, Sosamba, and DJ Ed Szynszyl.

The festival is being organized by Macunaima-the Brazilian Cultural Foundation, and ES Production.
