Warsaw's Luna Cinema is hosting the 5th OFF/ON European Film Week to celebrate independent cinema Aug. 18-23. "We want OFF/ON to be thought provoking, we want it to get people to stop and reflect and to open them up to a world waiting to be discovered," says festival director Agnieszka Wlazeł. Such films are personally enriching and broaden our outlook and our horizons. Our everyday lives start to take on a whole new meaning."

The festival will be screening Spanish, German and Estonian previews this year while a couple of slightly older Bulgarian films delve into some little known or passed over events from the not too distant past. Polish cinema is being represented by Andrzej Jakimowski's Sztuczki (Tricks), an evocative and intimate story about growing up and the need of love.

Major European features will be screened daily at 8 p.m. There will also be OFF/ON photographic and filmmaking workshops every day from noon till 3 p.m. And independent shorts from both students and professionals will be battling it out from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m. for the OFF/ON Grand Prix.

Admission to all festival events is free. Invitations-available from the Luna box office from Aug. 12-are required for evening screenings.
