Poland's most renowned symphony orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, will be giving free classical and contemporary orchestral concerts during the 8th Sinfonia Varsovia Swojemu Miastu (The Sinfonia Varsovia for its City) Festival Sept. 1-14.

The Sinfonia Varsovia's artistic director, the world-renowned composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, will be celebrating his upcoming 75th birthday with a special concert that features his music alongside works by Dvorak and Mendelssohn. The festival's final concert will commemorate the 180th anniversary of the death of Austrian composer Franz Schubert. Jacek Kasprzyk will conduct the Sinfonia Varsovia in a performance of Schubert's third symphony.

The Sinfonia Varsovia for Its City Festival was first held in 2001 to present the Sinfonia Varsovia to as wide an audience as possible. This takes the orchestra outside the concert hall and into other venues, some of which are not often associated with high culture. This year, there will be concerts at the Wielki Theater and a number of Warsaw churches. There will even be an open-air concert of famous arias, duets, waltzes and polkas in Sowińskiego Park.

Sept. 1-14, Admission to all concerts is free. A free pass is required for some concerts due to limited seating.
