Come Listen to Wilanów Bugle Call
September 3, 2008
Article's tools:

The Warsaw district of Wilanów has a brand-new bugle call that will be officially performed for the first time on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. on the square in front of Wilanów's St. Anne's Church.

The Agartis Foundation for Culture and Education organized a competition to find a new bugle call to mark the 325th anniversary of the breaking of the Siege of Vienna. In 1683, Poland's King Jan III Sobieski marched on Vienna and routed the Turkish army that had laid siege to Vienna.

A three-man jury announced the winning tune Aug. 25 and the bugle call will be played for the first time during the Jan III Sobieski in Vienna classical music concert. The Bractwo Złotej Blachy band will play during the concert and trumpeter Tomasz Kirszling will play the winning bugle call.

Marcin Błażewicz, a professor at Warsaw's Academy of Music, headed the panel of judges. The other jurors were Tomasz Ciorgoń, deputy mayor of Wilanów, and Jerzy Koronowski, chairman of the Polish Association of Music Composers.
