September 17, 2008
Article's tools:

President Lech Kaczyński has invited 55 heads of state, including the presidents of the United States, Russia, France and Georgia, to a special ball to celebrate Polish Independence Day Nov. 11.

The prime minister and the Sejm and Senate speakers have also been invited as have other high ranking public figures. Invitations will also be sent to local government officials, the clergy, the military and veterans' organizations.

Invitees have until Sept. 30 to indicate their attendance. About 15 presidents have so far given preliminary confirmation that they will attend. "These are countries with close ties to us or which neighbor Poland," said Michał Kamiński, a senior official at the President's Office.

The ball will be held Nov. 11 on the 90th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence after more than 100 years of partition. The celebrations will start with the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, followed by lunch at the Royal Castle and a viewing of a special exhibition and finally a ball at the Wielki Theater.
