Leonard Cohen Coming to Town

Legendary poet, novelist and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen is performing in Warsaw Oct. 1. Cohen's songs penetrate the innermost recesses of the human soul. He is probably best known here for his ballad "Dance Me To The End Of Love" although the novel Beautiful Losers and the classic song "Bird On A Wire," both of which were written on the Greek island of Hydra, are also favorites in Poland. Cohen spent several years on Hydra and it was to become one of the defining periods of his life, adding yet another cultural dimension to Cohen, who was born in the French-speaking Canadian city of Montreal to a Jewish family of Polish and Lithuanian descent and rabbinical traditions.

Cohen started out back in the 1950s reciting his poems to the accompaniment of a jazz band before entering the mainstream of American verse through the tradesman's entrance of the beatnik movement.

Cohen has had a loyal cult following in Poland ever since he first came here in 1985. Concerts by foreign artists of Cohen's stature were remarkable for their almost complete non-occurrence before communism collapsed in 1989. Former underground Polish singer-songwriter Maciej Zembaty has further popularized Cohen's poems and songs here by translating them into Polish. Cohen dedicated the autographed lithographs in his most recent album Dear Heather (2004) to his Polish fans as a way of thanking them.
