This year's The Myth of Faust in Music and Theater Festival closes on Oct. 18. On the last day of the festival the organizers will show the film Faust - Eine Deutsche Volkssage, directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau.

Murnau made this film with not so much Wolfgang Goethe's drama in mind as medieval folklore. Faust (Gösta Ekman) gives his soul to Mephistopheles (Emil Jannings) in exchange for becoming young again. After a stay in Italy, where he enjoys life to the full, Faust returns home and falls in love with a young woman (Camilla Horn) whom he seduces with the help of her aunt (Yvette Guilbert).

Whereas the majority of German film critics compare the film to Goethe's literary work, European critics say that Murnau succeeded in creating a spontaneous and suggestive work of German expressionist art.
