Sztuczki (Tricks), a Polish film directed by Andrzej Jakimowski, is officially in the running for next year's American Academy Awards in the foreign-language film category. This comes after a decision made Sept. 20 in the coastal city of Gdynia by a panel of judges appointed by Polish culture and national heritage minister Bogdan Zdrojewski.

The judges, chaired by Robert Gliński, considered films shown in Polish cinemas from Oct. 1 last year and a number of new releases scheduled to hit the silver screen by Sept. 30.

Sztuczki won the Golden Lions award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia last year. The movie has also garnered awards at nearly 30 other festivals, including those in Venice, Salonika, Kiev, Miami, and New York. The film has been distributed in 26 foreign countries. In October, Sztuczki will additionally be shown in countries including France, luxembourg and Belgium.

From among the films submitted by individual countries, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will shortlist nominees in January. The Oscars awards ceremony will take place in the second half of February.
