In a treat for fans of alternative rock, British band Anathema will play at the Proxima club in Warsaw Oct. 20.

Formed in Liverpool in 1990 under the name Pagan Angel, Anathema initially played death doom metal, and, alongside the bands Katatonia, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, it is considered to be a precursor of the genre. These days, their music is classified as either art rock or alternative rock.

The group released their first four albums on the legendary Peaceville record label. Their next three albums, Judgement (1999), A Fine Day To Exit (2001), and A Natural Disaster (2003), were released by the now-defunct Music for Nations label.

Anathema played in Poland at last year's Union of Rock festival in the northeastern city of Węgorzewo.

The band's gig in Warsaw this year will promote Anathema's latest album Horizons (2008). French group Demians will be the opening act at the Proxima.

Oct. 20, 8 p.m., Proxima, 99a Żwirki i Wigury St.
Tickets cost zl.80 and zl.90 (on the day of the concert), available at www.shortcut.pl, the Traffic Club (25 Bracka St.) and EMPiK stores.
